It is the oldest museum in Apulia commissioned in 1868 by Duke Sigismondo Castromediano, patriot, archaeologist and great man of letters.
The museum hosts ancient finds from all over Salento, the most complete collection of Attic red-figure vases, Messapian pottery, vases and statues from the Imperial age, originally found in the amphitheater.
The museum contains also a remarkable collection of paintings while another areais dedicated to the conservation and protection of pictorial and sculptural pieces of artists who worked in Salento during the 19th and 20th century.
