Stereoscopic 3D Visualization to Enhance Presence and Teleoperation

Stereoscopic 3D Visualization provides users with higher depth impression of observed scenarios, with consequences in terms of sense of presence, remote environment comprehension and accurate teleintervention. This tutorial introduces the basics of stereoscopic 3D viewing and show its advantages in various applications ranging from entertainment to performance improvement in robotic and medical applications.
Salvatore Livatino received the M.Sc. Degree in Computer Science from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1993 and the Ph.D. Degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Aalborg University, Denmark, in 2003. He worked for 12 years at Aalborg University, first as Research Fellow, then as an Assistant Professor, and finally as an Associate Professor. From 1993 to 1997 he was a Researcher with the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa, Italy; in 1995 with the University of Leeds, United Kingdom; in 1996 with INRIA Grenoble, France; and in 2001 with The University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
He is currently a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) with the University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, and his teaching experience has mostly been within problem-based learning and multidisciplinary education. He is the author of several journal and conference papers, and has contributed to many European projects and U.K. grants. His research interests include 3D visualization and computer graphics, stereoscopic-3D viewing, virtual and augmented reality, immersive computer games, telerobotics, and telemedicine.
TUTORIAL 2:
3D Imaging, Modelling and Fruition in Cultural Heritage

The tutorial is presented in an applicative context where the results are brought to fruition for academic, connoisseurs and the general public. Several examples of 3D technology applications carried out at the SIBA 3D Lab for Museums and Departments of the University of Salento will be discussed. Practical demonstrations will be also presented.
Since 2000 Adriana Bandiera works at the 3D Laboratory of SIBA 3D Lab for Museums and Departments of the University of Salento, Italy. She took part in many projects aimed at the preservation, enhanced knowledge, and the assessment of valuable objects of high historical and artistic value including archaeological sites. Through the years she has gained considerable skills in 3D laser scanning, 3D modelling, texture mapping and visualization. Adriana is author of many publications on digital technologies as applied to cultural heritage.
